I am not looking for anything fancy, just a DVR that has an IR blaster, records in 720p or 1080i/p and an EPG so you can scheduled shows.

I have been unable to find anything thats in HD and is subscription free.

Any ideas suggestions?

I have the Channel Master unit, which works perfectly in my experience, though it doesn't have anything like the slickness of Tivo. http://www.channelmaster.com/Digital_TV_and_HDTV_HD_digital_recorder_CM_7000PAL_DVR_s/120.htm

This unit has been discontinued, with a promised replacement from Channel Master, but I've not seen any news lately on specs or a street date.

To bring this thread up to date: The Latest Channel Master DVR+ for 2014 is an excellent alternative to the TiVo, and still NO monthly fee and 14 day guide by Rovi if connected to the internet, otherwise only 3 day (likely PSIP). See the videos on YouTube or read reviews at CNET.

Windows Media Center (WMC) has no charges for the electronic guide. Use with say a Silicon Dust HDHomeRun Prime Cable Card reader.

Why do you need an IR Blaster? What will your source be, antenna, cable, or satellite? Some of the suggestions you're getting are with the assumption that you're recording off of an antenna. If that's not the case then your choices change a bit.
