Replacing Satellite or U-Verse box with HTPC

I am going to moving into my own place next year and I'm not sure which TV service I will be getting yet. The choices are either cable, U-Verse/FIOS, Directv or Dish. I know I can get a cable card and put into a htpc if I chose cable but it won't work if I have satellite or fiber. Are there any alternatives to this or am I screwed and have to have a cable box?

How do you feel about off-the-air? I used to use a Silicon Dust HDHomeRun Prime CableCARD tuner with Windows Media Center and Comcast cable. It worked, but it was honestly a bit of a pain in the ass and I was constantly playing tech support for my wife and kids. I dumped it for a quad-tuner Tablo DVR and have been much happier with it. The only caveat being I am now limited to OTA content. With the ability to watch and record all the major broadcast networks, plus subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime, I have not missed cable at all.

I don't care about apathy

Main System: Sony XBR75X940C * Marantz SR6010 * Marantz MM-9000 * MSI Cubi HTPC (OpenPHT/Aeon Nox) * Roku Ultra * Samsung Blu-Ray * Paradigm Studio/40 v.2 * Paradigm Studio/CC v.2 * Paradigm ADP-370 * SVS PB12-Plus/2 * Harmony Ultimate One * HDFury Linker (Zone 2)

You could buy something modular, like the WeTek Play, and then get any of the tuning modules when the need arises. My friend has one with a DVB-S tuner. He's thinking about buying the dual DVB-S tuner.
