Is there a hard disk recorder that can be used as a VCR replacement only?In other words, it won't need a subscription (or lifetime pass) but rather is programmed like a VCR maybe using VCRplus. My mother-in-law wants to record her soaps but doesn't want or need time shifting, etc. She keeps wearing out VCR's so I thought hard disk recorded would be better.

Panasonic makes a PVR/DVD-R

I think RCA has a PVR that works just that way.

Look for units that come with 'Tivo Basic' ... it provides basic recording functionality with the option of upgrading (to full Tivo functionality).

The Toshiba SD-H400 is a Tivo/Progressive Scan DVD player that comes with 'Tivo Basic'. The Panasonic DVR-810H is a Tivo/DVD Burner that comes with 'Tivo Basic'.

I don't know what other 'Tivo Basic' products may be coming out ... but it looks like a good solution.

Thanks. With both those you are also buying a DVD (or DVD-R) so the cost is higher. The Panny unit looks pretty cool.

The RCA DRC7005N is available at a pretyt low price from some places ... it does include a DVD player ... but a very reasonable price ... I'm not sure, perhaps they released a model w/o the DVD player.

My wife loves the DVR service from our cable company ... yes, there's a monthly fee ... but no up front equipment charges and your mother-in-law could try it out and see if she likes it (seems like a very low-cost way to introduce a DVR IF you have cable and IF it's available in your area).
