Hi, I want to get a PVR for Colombia, SouthAmerica. I want to use it to record, pause live, and skip commercials. I don't mind not having a TV Guide on-line (in fact, I don't think there is one for Colombia). My TV source is SkyTV (similar to DirectTV).
I am a complete newbie on PVR, but from what I have read, TiVo, ReplayTV and UltimaTV charges you with a monthly or life fee, for a service I won't be using (the guide).
What are my options? Are there any PVRs completely stand-alone that don't require a subscription and can be used outside USA? Do they work with Digital Setellite Decoders? My last option would be a PC PVR because that would mean to upgrade most of my hardware.

Thanks for your help and time

Regards

Jairo

Jairo,

I did a quick check online and I see that Columbia uses the NTSC TV standard (same as US). Therefore your satellite receiver output is also likely to be NTSC.

You might consider checking out the RCA DRS7000 or DRS7005N. These are combination DVD player/PVRs. I just order a refurbished 7000 from the following folks:

http://www.compgeeks.com

Do a search on this forum and you'll see comments about these units. The 7005 is "better" as it will play SVCDs, has more options for recording quality and the hard drive can be easily upgraded. Both will work without a guide (it uses a free Guide for in the US and Canada) with the limitation of 16 recording events max.

I'll be using my unit to record from the NTSC outputs of various satellite receivers I have here in Greece. I don't think it will work with PAL signals (but I'll try it just to see). Thomson markets similar units under their name here in Europe.

Regards,

Gary
