For a homemade PVR, what settings are people using?

Things like codec, resolution, CBR/VBR rates and other settings make for a lot of options.

There is a trade off between quality, size and realtime encoding ability. For a good quality DV transfer, it takes much longer to encode than 29 frames per second. That realtime encoding requirement for PVR makes the settings much more critical.

I'm using a Samsung 50" DLP for the display, so it has to look good when big.
