The only 16:9 widescreen channels on DirecTV are the HDTV channels. You won't get widescreen unless you buy the HDTV DirecTivo.

The 16:9 option on non-HDTV DirecTV receivers doesn't do anything.

The only anamorphic standard definition DirecTV broadcasts I have seen is Cirque du Soleil Quidam and one other Cirque du Soleil presentation on Bravo. Even then the DirecTV receivers did nothing to correctly format the picture for a widescreen TV and it had to be done using the monitor feature. Anybody with a 4:3 display without the anamorphic squeeze feature watching those programs had to watch vertically stretched circus performers and egg shaped circles.

Anamorphic widescreen would be an improvement over letterbox showings on DirecTV but apparently it isn't going to happen.
