I would like suggestions on which DVR system I should get. My must-have's are dual tuner and that it works with generic cable.

My previous setup was a directivo, but in my new appartment I can't setup a dish. I considered a stand-alone TiVo but I don't think I can live without the dual tuner.

My cable provider (something called Starpower) doesn't offer DVR, but luckily they don't require a cable box, so that should make things easier.

Any suggestions are welcome, including PC based.

TIA

unroar,

There aren't any standalone dual tuner cable DVRs available. If your cable company doesn't offer one, you are out of luck. All the standalone Tivo and ReplayTV DVRs feature only a single tuner.

You can setup a PC with two separate TV tuner cards, but obviously it won't be as seamless, as easy to use, or as functional as the DirecTivo. The next version of Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center edition will support 2+ tuners, so that may give you a new option when it becomes available in late October or November. For suggestions on PC setups, see the HTPC forum.

That's what I suspected. I never knew how good I had it with my DirecTiVo!

Thanks for your help.

I happened across your link right after I read this:

If what this link says is true, you're appatment complex owner cannot prevent you from installing a dish.

Carl,

Here's a more appropriate link:

FCC Fact Sheet on Antennas and Satellite Dishes

The apartment complex can't prevent him from installing a dish, so long as he does so on his "exclusive use" area -- like a balcony. If he doesn't have a balcony or other "exclusive use" area where he can mount the dish, or doesn't have line of sight, then he is out of luck.
