Hi,

I've got a service provider who uses the DVI/DCT5000 model from Motorola
which is kind of old and doesnt exactly utilize my HDTV plasma to its fullest.
So, I found the DCT6412 in the same series from motorola.

Anyone know if I could connect the DCT6412 through my cable network and as
long as my provider is willing to activate it, it should work?

Anyone done something similar?

I don't think the DCT6412 can be privately owned. In the USA, cable DVRs are only sold to cable companies in bulk who then rent them out to their subscribers. They are never sold to the public, only rented out so they remain the property of the cable provider.

Many many people have bought "used" or "abandoned by tenant" cable DVRs off EBay and so far not one of em has been able to get it to work with their cable company since it wasn't originally issued by their cable company. Only the ones they rent to you will work.

How does Europe figure into this? If this 6412 is for auction on EBay and the seller is in the USA, the DVR is almost assuredly stolen or not returned to the original cable provider that it came from.

If you're in Canada then some cable companies do sell or rent DVRs to their subscribers, but i still don't think a unit from another provider would work on their network.
