For quite some time now I have been wanting a DVR. I am mostly interested in time shifting (pause/rewind live TV). I will also use it to record programs when I am not able to watch live. Here is my problem.

I have Comcast TV/Internet pakcage. I have the basic-expanded package. I have decided that I don't want Comcast's DVR becuase I'll have to buy the digital cable package to rent their DVR.

I checked into Tivo but everything I've seen indicates that I'll have to have a phone line. I don't use a land line (cell phone only).

I currently use a PVR card with my computer but the card I have isn't perfect and I like to watch TV in my $900 Lay-Z-Boy, not at my computer.

Are there any other set-top PVR/DVR options available for me? I don't mind paying a subscription fee (under $15). I just don't want to have to double the price of my cable bill and/or get a telephone land line.

Thanks,

Got any links for me to research. Do they pause/rewind live TV? Are the HDDs serviceable (ie. can I install a larger hard drive)?

Thanks.

You can use Tivo with a broadband connection and no land line.

You need a USB -> Ethernet dongle and connection to your LAN (note, some work better than others).

The only trick may be when you first run guided setup. Some machines/software seems to be able to run guided setup straight out of the box over broadband. Others seem to need a phone line first. Basically, take the Tivo to work or a neighbor's with acces to a land line and run guided setup (if need be).

After that ... no need for a phone line.

Actually, I have two modded Xboxes (my son wouldn't let me play with his so I had to buy my own). I want something that is a little less pain in the ass. I want to just be able to sit down at the TV like 'normal' people; with a remote in one hand and a beer in the other. I don't want to have to screw around with networking and/or transferring files from the PC to the Xbox.

Right now, Tivo is looking like the most likely alternative. I think my neighbor will let me string a telephone line from his house to mine so that I can do the initial setup. If he won't play ball then I can take it to a friend's house and do it from there.

I really think your best/easiers/cheapest bet is to get the comcast box. The orignals were weak -- but the newer 2 tuner headed ones are not bad at all 40 hour recording.

I know you said you didn't want to upgrade to digital cable, but I think the extra channels and signal quality are "worth it" esp. if you have even one premium channel (HBO/SHO/MAX)

How big is your TV? HD? The picture is much much better on larger TVs
