8300HDDVR HDMI cable to a Sony A10

I had set it up to use 480i 720p and 1080i. When I had a component cable I had it set to pass-through. After hooking up the HDMI I lost the pass-through option (no big deal) and now it's AUTO HDMI/DVI. All is good so far.

The box still passes through the signal and the TV then scales it. When flipping through the channels I can see it switch to the different formats and it says Auto on the display.

Last night I turned on an SD channel and it looked awful. I noticed that the box said 1080i on the display. I thought hmmm, wth? I turned off the cable box and went into the setup mode. I made sure my formats were selected and powered back on. No change, SD was still being upconverted to 1080i in the STB.

I then went into the general menu and changed the Mode to Fixed instead of AUTO HDMI/DVI. Then I changed the SD channel to 480i. Picture looked much better.

I then turned AUTO HDMI/DVI back on in the general settings and flipped through the channels.

It says AUTO on the screen and I see the correct formats displayed on the box.

Any clue why it changed itself back to only 1080i?

STB freak out?
