I don't have a set top box from the cable company, and don't really want one.

My TV already has a cable card and a builtin digital/HD tuner.

What I'm looking for is a DVR that supports CableCard, so I can record things like HBO in HD, and then play it to the TV either over HDMI or component.

Is there even such a thing, and would Comcast give me a free cablecard to plug into it? Or am I stuck using Comcast approved equipment, and have to rent a DVR that would also act like a cable box?

Sony DHG-HDD500

Sony DHG-HDD250

Mitsubishi HD-6000

If you have a CableCard TV with Firewire out you may be able to use something like the following. These aren't full blown CableCard DVRs ... they're basically AVHDD hard drives that attach to the TV. However, check for compatibility because to be usefull they must be supported by the TV:

Toshiba Symbio 160HD4

Announced / press releases / whatever but not available:

Recent Tivo announcement

Very old Motorola announcement

That's all I know of ...

Try signing up for a Tivo Beta tester. Maybe they have one available for testing right now. :)
