I don't know why I didn't realize this before now, but anyway . . .
I have a non-HD Scientific Atlanta 8000 DVR Cable box from Time Warner Cable in Queens (NYC). I have the Digitial Audio Out (Coax) connected to my Surround Sound system (amplifier)
When I had premium channels earlier in the year (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax), I was able to receive full Dolby Digital Surround Sound (5.1) while watching those channels. However, I've never been able to receive 5.1 sound on any other channels.
I was just exploring the channels, and discovered that there is now in the early 700s HD versions of several channels, including CBS, FOX, TNT. Since I don't have HD, there is no picture when I turn to those channels (don't know why the box can't downgrade to standard def. . . ), but my sound system immediately switches to 5.1 sound. If I switch back to the standard version of that channel, surround sound is gone.
I know that these channels are being broadcast in surround sound, and have been for quite a while, and obviously my system is capable of receiving the surround sound.
How then do I get it to give me 5.1 sound on these channels (ie: CBS,FOX primetime TV)? There's no reason why 5.1 should be avail. only in HD channels, when I know for a fact that at least the premium channels offer 5.1 on non-HD channels.
