Hi,
Just wondered if anyone has found a way around the subscription part of recording tv shows, i.e. using a DVR as a VCR and not paying for the service?
TIA, :)

Get a DVR that doesn't require a subscription to use.

There are lots of them ... most use the TVGuide On Screen guide data (although there's also the Microsoft/LG DVR which doesn't). Most are combo DVR/DVD burners ... although there's a few DVR-only a few HD models that pop up from time to time.

A really good solution is to get a 3000-series replayTV. They work
great and can access the replayTV guide, but if anything
ever goes wrong with that they work fine as a VCR with no subscription.

Plus, there is code around to run your own server for one, if need be.

The Tivo's with built in DVD players have the ability to work without subscription. Philips Series one Tivo's don't need service to be programmed like a VCR.

What btl-a4 is referring to is "TiVo Basic". See http://customersupport.tivo.com/know...lic/tv1199.htm. I think sales of TiVo basic units stopped awhile ago and lifetime as an option is going away today for all TiVos non-Humax DVD recorder TiVos unless you have a valid TiVo lifetime subscription gift card.

Last time I looked, my local Sears still had the Toshiba with free basic TiVo in stock. I think my local BB just recently took them off the shelves.

Tivo Basic is different from the Series 1 philips. They get no program data, you just input time, channel and length. Other series 1's have this funtion if they were produced before a certain date, which I'm not sure of.
