I live in New Zealand. At the end of the year we are finally getting FTA digital television so I am interested in a dual tuner PVR with a nice interface (I'm guessing there will be limited options available as part of the service in NZ so I am trying to find out what is available elsewhere for satellite transmissions). Knowing nothing about PVRs, I have been searching the internet trying to find out more.

Here are a few things I have been wondering:

1) Can you buy directly from manufacturers such as Pace Micro, or do they only supply in bulk to pay TV networks etc?
2) With a PVR, what is fast forwarding and rewinding like? More like a DVD or a video tape?
3) Any specific recommendations for DVB-S transmissions? Preferably an aesthetically pleasing box (most don't look all that great) with a nice, easy to use GUI.
4) Is it possible to remove video content off PVRs to your computer via their ethernet connection or at least stream it to your computer or another set top box?
5) Any other helpful information that I may have over looked?

Thanks. :)

PVR policies vary by country and within some countries - but in general, you can only get a PVR that works with a satellite service from the provider or from retailers authorized by the provider.

Generally much better than a DVD.

Again - varies by country - but mostly no. It is supposed to be mandated in the US using 1394 - but compliance is low.
