I've read in some of the posts here about PVRs and I am a little confused. I've read about the Toshiba RD-XS52 DVD which I can get a refurb for around $280.00 (mixed impressions). I've also heard of the Samsung DVD-HR731 at 499.99 (not out yet?). For the price diff should I wait or go with the toshiba?

My dilemma is I just upgraded to HD Dish Network and my tivo looks like poop (Svideo only). I am looking for a non subscription based PVR that will function somewhat like the tivo (wishlist, pull files through the network etc). I want to record High Def to the Hard Drive for playback only. What is the best PVR in your opinion on the market and is it worth the wait for the Samsung? I think a post also stated the Samsung is more compatible with Satelitle? As far as the up conversion advertised is my HD reciver already doing so when it shoots SD through HDMI? Or am I lead to believe the PVR will enhance SD? I hope what I am asking makes sense.

Thanks

I went looking for options to replace our TiVos and came up empty. Everything was either tied to a subscription service, discontinued long ago, or too make-it-at-home for my tastes.

The Samsung's TVGOS service is supposed to be compatible with satellite. The Panasonic E75 and E55 are supposed to be, too.

They also won't record in hi-def - only 480i.

Also, TVGOS doesn't have a "wishlist"- like feature. But you can set it to record shows daily or regularly. And you can look up shows categorically from 8 days worth of advanced listings.

You can get more information on SD DVR/DVD Recorders in the DVD Recorder threads.

If you want a DVR to record HD from satellite then the *ONLY* option is to use the satellite company DVR. There are no standalone HDTV DVRs for satellite, and it is unlikely there will be. Standalone HDTV DVRs are all antenna and/or cable.

If you buy the dish network HD PVR it will only record 30 hours of HD material. Most over the air HD devices with a hard disk will record around 9 hours.

No way!

My Sony DHG-HDD500 DVR will record up to 60 hours in HD to it's hard drive.

(No satellite HD - just OTA and cable.)

So will mine - but they are not easy to get any more. Discontinued 6 months ago.

They're still available if you look around a bit. Someone on this forum ordered one just the other day from, I believe, Best Buy.
