I am thinking about making the move to comcast and get a digital package. I know they have their own DVR, but I was wondering if there are any other options out there with tivo functions. I could probably use a series 3 tivo, but that is too expensive to tivo standard cable.

Thanks

I don't know of any other options that are still in production.

In December Comcast will start rolling out Comcast DVR's with TiVo software, but that will be your only other option to simply using their DVR without TiVo or going with TiVo S3.

Rumors indicate it will be an additional $5 per month over the price for the DVR.

Wow, that means it would be $15.00 a month on top of cable.

Yup, and well worth it if it really improves the user-interface that much, without introducing new buginess. Figure TiVo is now (price change as of yesterday) charging $19.95 per month on top of cable, for its Series 2 (non-HD) subscriptions.

Will the Comcast TiVo offering be a software upgrade on the existing 6412/6416 or will it be a different platform? If the former, will it be user-upgradable?

The word is that the initial port of TiVo software is specific to the Motorola 34xx/64xx boxes, and will be allegedly downloaded into existing boxes in the field (for those customers who purchase the option).

The folks who know the answer to that are not yet allowed to share that information with the public.
