Rumors have been confirmed that PS3 will have some DVR functionality, but it is not clear how much so, especially in terms of what video/audio INPUT it will take.

Also there has been a rumor that a PS3 will act like a slingbox, using the Location Free technology to allow PSP users to view their PS3 DVR content anywhere they have wi-fi.

Regardless I haven't seen a thread to discuss PS3's DVR functionality (I am not clear on it all), so I am starting one.

Please inform and discuss. Thanks!!

Anyone have any info on this? Internet searches are not yielding any current news info, but I did hear (on Attack of the Show) that you will be able to watch stuff off the PS3's HDD with your PSP anywhere you have a wi-fi connection.

BUT I want to know if PS3 will have (or will soon have) a way to send it TV shows and movies from a cable DVR and use PS3 as a long term storage solution AND if you will be able to expand the hard disk space of the PS3 with external HDD's and the like.

Thanks.

The DVR statement was made a LONG time ago by Ken Kutaragi. He has been known for making lots of crazy statements. Considering that the PS3 has no video input and that their software has plenty of glitches to get fixed before DVR functionality ever comes into the picture, I wouldn't hold my breath...

Of course it does....but some people are being real picky in the fact that there is like 2-3% of the ps2 games that it dont play.

Something I can surely live with myself.

They will probably even fix that in the near future but even if they dont its such a small percentage that its not a big deal.

The ps3 can currently run a linux OS. Although this OS does NOT have direct access to the video hardware (RSX) this opens many possibilities.

a MythTV frontend is able to be run on the hardware with little to no modification. (Note, you still require a backend server with TV tuners or DVB-S or OTA tuners to handle recordings and serving)

As well xmms and mplayer should work just fine. Mplayer supports virtually all video formats besides DRM'ed stuff. xmms supports all non DRM'ed audio formats.

Linux has alot of support for media, as long as it isnt locked down by some crap DRM ****.
If its playable on the PowerPC version of the linux kernel, its playable on the ps3. The CPU is clocked at 3.2GHZ and *should* handle hdtv video, depending on the codec used to encode it

Great! By then I'll be ready to trade in my PS2 that I just bought... Having children will set you back in the gamers world. Gamespot is a wonderfull place, just finished Ico and Shadows, then traded them in for a different game before the week was up.
