Personally, I would not even consider disconnecting the fan. These babies run hot at the best times, so you're just asking for trouble if you disable the fan. Not to mention you'll instantly void your warranty if you do.
Better to put your components in a glass-front cabinet that with a couple of 120mm low-RPM fans installed around back to keep the air flowing. That's what I've done and it works wonderfully for both cooling and noise reduction.
