I just got this receiver set-up in my room for my plasma. Unfortunately, the hum of the receiver's hard-drive fan is really annoying when trying to go to sleep even after the receiver has been shut down. Do you think I could unplug this fan and not worry about my hard drive overheating? I have the box sitting a little over the edge of the shelf to open up the drive to fresh air on both sides
Personally, I would not even consider disconnecting the fan. These babies run hot at the best times, so you're just asking for trouble if you disable the fan. Not to mention you'll instantly void your warranty if you do.
Better to put your components in a glass-front cabinet that with a couple of 120mm low-RPM fans installed around back to keep the air flowing. That's what I've done and it works wonderfully for both cooling and noise reduction.
How bad is the fan noise on these? I'm considering one of these for our bedroom...but not sure if I (or more specifically my wife) could put up with constant fan noise...is the fan on all the time? I know people recommend leaving the unit on 24/7 to avoid a few issues, so I dunno if turning it off would really be an option, either.
