Maybe I'm just overlooking it, but, is there no other way to fast forward or back other than the 3 or 4 speeds that "scan" with the video playing? I mean, I know that the DVR doesn't put chapters in or anything, but what if I want to show someone a "really good part" that was in the middle of a 3 hour show you're almost done with? There is no 15 or 30 minute skip? You can only scan shead or back? Seems dumb.

One word of advice. To do a 2, 3, or 4X scan, press the button more slowly than you would for other devices, say a 1-2 count between presses. These machines do not take kindly to a rapid series of commands.

YMMV

I understand, but is the 4x speed the fastest way to get somewhere? Even then, 1 minute of recording only goes by in 10 seconds or so. I guess I was hoping the search would be more dvd'ish than vcr'ish speedwise.

While you are fast forwarding (at any of the 3 speeds), you can press the right arrow button to skip 15 minutes forward.

While you are rewinding you can press the left arrow button to skip 15 minutes backward.

Hope this helps.

Neither of these worked on my 6412, 3412 or 3416. Pressing the right arrow while fast forwarding makes fast forward go faster, or stop fast forwarding. Similarly, pressing the left arrow while rewinding makes rewind go faster, or stop rewinding.

All of this seems to vary based on your provider.

On my 6412, I can FF at rates that basically equal about 1min of video/sec. My father's box can't do this same speed.. and he's on the same 6412, but different provider.
