I would like to get a media player that plays the ReplayTV 5500 mpg files without any conversion. I have read that the ReplayTV hardware uses the IIRC codec and writes mpeg2 files that have extra info in the header. Some Windows apps don't care and some do. I could use womble or something like that to make the mpeg2 files compliant. However, I am hoping that one of the media players (Dlink 320 or Netgear Eva700, etc.) can just play them even though it is an odd codec and has extra header info in the file.

My plan is to get the Dlink DSM-520 and the HP Media Vault MV2010 to store and serve up the shows. I plan to use DVarchive to extract the shows from the ReplayTV and store just the .mpg on the Media Vault.

Does anyone know how the current media players handle ReplayTV files?

Yes, I have tried VLC and it works. I am not sure if it is because I already installed a codec that made windows media player work but it does play ReplayTV files.

However, what I am really look for is a way to play them on my TV. I am thinking of the DLink DSM-520. If I can't get a medial player I could put a computer in the living room and get Sage TV on it since it will be in there anyway but hoped to avoid that because my current computer is too loud for the living room.

Moved this discussion to the ReplayTV forum since it seems to fit there better.

I just noticed this with the latest firmware but it exists in 1.05 too. It seems the DSM-520 does not interpret MPEG-1 layer II 48khz audio correctly. (This is the Audio stream within a ReplayTV MPEG-2 file).

It seems that it's interpreting the audio as being 44.1Khz and causing the pitch of the audio to be slightly lower but noticeable (everyone has a deeper voice and the pitch of music is brought down about 10% I guess). It is not effecting the audio sync.

The Archos' TV Plus plays replay TV files fine, if you buy the $20 "cinema" plugin.

Do you know if it plays Tivo files, as well? I have both (RTV 5040 & TivoHD and I would probably pick up an Archos TV+ if it could play both.

Can't say whether or not it plays Tivo files, but you can probably find out over at:
