I have a Motorola DCT6412 from Cox Communications. My firewire ports are active and I have successfully been able to re-record high-def transport streams to my PC. (By the way, Motorola's own FAQ now links to the avsforum post explaining how to do this!)

My question is, can I seemlessly expand my DVR's storage capacity by attaching an external hard drive? The answers I get here and other sites are confusing - a lot about firmware and different providers.

I can't seem to find a definitive answer for a Cox 6412. I thought, what the heck, why not ask just ask Cox? I sent them an e-mail, and here is the one-line response I got back:

"There are ways, but we do not support that."

What does this mean?! Does this mean it can be done with 6412s, but not those provided by Cox, or does it mean that it can be done with a Cox 6412, but they won't tell me how?

Any help would be appreciated!

Well, I guess I will answer my own question.

Motorola FAQ says this with regard to connecting external drives:

"This feature is not currently supported. This future feature is controlled by software which can be downloaded by your cable service provider when the software company provides the update."

I e-mailed Motorola to get an update, and got this response:

"We have not been told when the update will become available. I do know that they aren't planning on doing it anytime soon."

So there you go.

Hold the phone - I just got a response from Cox:

"You can do it with your cox unit, but we cannot assist with the
endeavor."

Maybe I'll buy a hard drive and give it a shot, but I'll be looking for a store with a good return policy.

I assembled all the necessary bits (spare dvr, 750gb hdd, cables, linux pc, etc.) some time ago but have lacked the time/focus to finish it!

It's on my todo list.

No, sorry.

In the meanwhile I have obtained a new Pace TDC775 Tahoe DVR that currently allows up to 750GB on an external eSATA port and I have swapped the internal drive to a 750GB as well.

So I'm not likely going to pursue the Moto patch.
