I did some looking around and am surprised that nobody seems to be stepping up to offer HD DVR boxen to compete with the TiVo Series 3. I did find a few products but they were years old and appeared to be discontinued. Does anyone know of a serious competitor for Tivo in HD DVRs? Every time I see a news flash about such a thing it's a manufacturer selling them to cable companies but no consumer stuff. Am I just not looking hard enough or is there nothing out there?

As with the hard drive DVD recorders, it seems the companies believe the market is too small because of cost in the smaller market numbers we AVSfolk represent.

That's it in a nutshell. There just aren't enough customers willing to pay enough money.

I am with dish network right now and they leased me this VIP622 HD DVR receiver. It works very well and I can use it to record OTA Local HD Channels. 90% of the time I still just watch my local HD channels. I don't know how much I would have to pay to keep this receiver if I were to cancel my service, but I can also pick one up used from online auctions sites for around $400. Seems like I could just buy it used for a fair price and then use it as standalone hd dvr receiver without subscribing to any satellite service.
Anyone know if it will work without any subscription?

No it will not work without a sat subscription, also dish makes you subscribe to the sd locals if you want the guide info for the OTA channels.
