I would like to record live tv and shows that I've recorded on my scientific atlanta explorer 8300hd dvr to my computer hard drive. Would this work if the cable goes into the dvr first, then into my computer via a pci capture device (such as the ATI TV Wonder 650 High Definition PVR & TV Tuner PCI Card), rather than connecting the cable directly to the pci capture device? Would I have to worry about any encryption or anything like that?

Thanks in advance!

If your SA8300 STB has an IEEE1394 (aka FireWire) connector on the rear AND it is NOT disabled by the cable co (FCC rules say it cannot be disabled as some HDTVs use that instead of DVI or HDMI for input) then you need to read the following thread on recording HD from IEEE1394 to Windows XP.
There is a similar thread for MAC users.

Stop!!! Don't buy that tuner card if you just want to record the IEEE1394 output of the SA8300!
All you need is a FIREWIRE card. I just bought one on eBaaaaaaaaaay for $10, but I haven't tried it yet. I bought it for the same reason, to record the FIREWIRE output of my Motorola DCT6416 Dual HD tuner DVR.

Only downsides are that the connection is in real-time only (ie a 2 hr movie takes 2hrs to copy) AND you cannot set the DCT to sequentially play a list of recorded movies.

There may be other options listed in other threads.
