hi,
If i purchase a Motorola DCT6412 or 6208 on eBay, will it just "work" w/ my existing Comcast digital service? These boxes are used in this area (Arlington, MA) .... or do i just call Comcast to activate it?

Am i a heretic?

I searched this site but couldn't find an answer.

thanks!

Almost certainly not. The majority of cable providers in the US do *not* sell the boxes to end users - they *only* lease them, and they will generally not activate a box they did not lease to you. You can ask them about it, but the odds are low. If you do buy such via eBay, it's most likely either stolen from a US cable provider, or sold by a Canadian cable customer - which would be legitimate, i.e., it's theirs to sell, but almost certainly not useful to you. I wouldn't recommend buying one off eBay from anyone in the states.

Noooooo! The Mot box is crap - buy the new $299 Tivo cable HD box with cablecards and pay Comcast a couple of bucks a month for an M card for it - you'll be so much happier

Can you buy a non-crippled DCT6400 of Ebay (or from Canadia) and swap the cable card from a DCT6400 from your cable company to it, and have it work?

Thanks, Jim.

Thanks, Jim.

Cable boxes from the cable company do not use a cable card.

Only the Motorola DCH set-top use CableCards, but no, you cannot swap the CableCard from one DCH box to another. It is tied to the original box.

If you want to purchase your own HD box, the only choices you have are the Tivo (dual-tuner, $250 + $10/mo or $699 with no subscription) and the Sony DHG-HDD250 (single tuner, $400-$500 with no subscription). Neither of these can access VOD, and only the TiVo will support SDV by way of a USB adapter.
