A friend of mine had his trailer broken into and almost everything was stolen, he parks his trailer at a gas station right next door to his house, and the surveillance cameras captured the people who robbed him. i have the video files but they are .dat and .idx files, how would i go about viewing this or converting this into a playable file, ive searched all around but cant find anything that works, i searched video helps forum, but couldn't find much and before i register to post on there i figured id check here, any help would be much appreciated he had about $7,000 worth of landscaping equipment stolen

Your best bet is to use the equipment which made the recordings to play them back. The files may be some proprietary format and not used elsewhere. The files might be a common format but just named with different extensions to confuse people. You might try using a text editor/viewer to actually look at the files and see if there is any English information in them; which will be near the start of the file(s).

Good luck.
