I live in an apartment complex that's made a deal with ATT Home
Entertainment to provide TV service to the building. As a result I get
what's essentially a stripped down DISH package. Aside from not
getting nearly as many HD channels as Direc TV, Cable, or even DISH
itself, ATT does not offer us an HD DVR. If we want a DVR from ATT, we
have to sacrifice HD service. So my question to you is, is there a
standalone HD DVR I can purchase to replace my settop box and record
programs, as well as watch HD content?

I currently have a DISH 811 HD box. Also, I don't need to be able to record programs in HD - but I just need to be able to watch live programming in HD.
I believe our building is set up with a satellite QAM setup, but a
coaxial cable comes out of the wall into the box for all my
programming.

Can anyone provide some insight/help to someone who doesnt really know anything about this stuff?

Thanks a lot,
Zac

As an alternative to the Dish settop receiver? No. You'd have to get an appropriate box from E*/Dish or one of their agents, and it'd have to be activated on the corresponding account - which it sounds like they probably wouldn't do for you. Supposedly in the near future there will be DVR options that will allow you to pull component video in in HD - but not yet.

Satellite (both E* and D*) *do not* use QAM; D* uses the proprietary Hughes DSS protocol, and E* uses DVB-S (or some bastardization thereof). No QAM receiver will be able to work with satellite service.
