Hello, I was hoping someone could help me with my system set up. I have a Yamaha 1800 receiver I want to use for surround sound during sporting events like the superbowl. However, I don't want surround sound on all the time, so I have my hddvr cable box output hdmi audio/sound to my plasma.

I have read it is not possible to output optical audio from the tv to the receiver. So, is it possible to output hdmi 1.3a audio/video to the tv, and also output optical audio to the receiver for surround sound at the same time? If possible, I could just mute the tv.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you

Yes, I did this. I ran the HDMI to the TV (Sony LCD) and the Optical to my Yahmaha HTR-6090.

on the settings of the cable box switch from HDMI or fixed to dolby digital.

you also need to turn the speakers off on your set.
