Evidence #1...That's what the sales dude at Best Buy at Dartmouth Crossing told me yesterday when I asked...He said that having CBC Radio One announcers say "CBC Radio One is available on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 137" at the top of each news hour is a powerful marketing tool!

Evidence #2....Before Xmas at Future Shop in Dartmouth Sirius had their rep camped out at the sat radio display area and was "converting" anyone asking about XM to Sirius....LOL..I watched him work the room for awhile.

Is this just a local thing?

Yes.. Sirius has been almost 3:1 in sales since Howard was signed.

That is really why the 2 companies are trying to merge as equals. XM had a HUGE lead, and then Sirius starting making up ground unbelievably fast. When they drew up the merger plans, XM still have a coule million or so more subscribers, but Sirius felt that they would catch XM by the merger and then eventually pass them.

Now they have just about caught up, and will pass.

What I don't undertand is how all of these listeners take it so personally. You state that Sirius is doing much better, and the XMer get all upset. XMers talk about how they hate Howard, or have better music, and the Sirius folk get all upset. I chose Sirius and couldn't be happier, and I'm happy for all you XMers that feel the same way. Look, these companies are struggling, and I want them to succeed.

Satellite radio is great, and I hope for the success of both companies, which might require a successful merger to happen. When we are all one, all of this stupid bickering can go away. Hopefully these companies can start better marketing too. If all these teenagers knew that they could get interbet radio, satellite radio, DVR-like recording, and listen to their MP3 on one device, satellite radio would explode. But now they are financially bleeding because of ipods.

Stop marketing NFL, MLB, and hundreds of channels, and target this enormous market of spoiled kids that get whatever they want.

I chose Sirius years before Howard's arrival and I'll have it for years after he's gone. I love listening to him but he's only one small part of all the great content on Sirius.

I had XM from the day they announced they signed with Nascar. When Nascar made the jump to Sirius for 2007 I subscribed to them just for the Nascar coverage and still had almost a year on the XM subscription so I had them both for almost a year. Lots of double coverage other than specific things and sports. Funny thing was XM had a booth set up at the Michigan race June 07. I don't know if it was a bad decision on their part or not but they were not getting any takers that I noticed. My take is a merger is the only thing that can happen. The market is not large enough to support two companies with overlapping coverage and it never has been. If not for a merger in a few years I would look for them both to go down the tubes. Nascar, NFL, NCAA, Stern, Martha Stewart are all just niche programming. Not one of them alone is going to keep anything afloat. I compare it to Blueray / HDDVD or VHS / Betamax. At some point one or the other is going to take the lead and end up the winner.

Not exactly. Those two camps never merged before a leader came forward (which is STILL XM by the way) and it looks like XM and Sirius will be one soon enough (God, let's hope not)

Just using that as a comparison. I think the merger is pretty much a done deal. It was not that long ago that equipment was either XM or Sirius compatible, one or the other, including makes of cars. Now more and more you see equipment that is ready for both. Who loses out? We do. I know I spent a ton on both XM and Sirius. The only thing I can hope for is when it does take place 50% of my stuff works even though they are saying all will be compatible. Famous last words maybe.

If you're referring to my response, I wasn't taking it personally, I just thought that throwing out the 80% and 20% numbers based on the "evidence" and the sources the OP used was rather moronic.

Only in that it should mean that sat radio stays in exisistence. Ultimatley for the consumer one company vs two will be a bad thing.

No.. It's just an observation in general of many forums...

Let me summarize every 4th post over the past couple of years on many forums:

Wow that was funny on Howard today.
You mean that overpaid jerk that is putting Sirius into bankruptcy?
I enjoy O&A much better.
Yeah their 0.0 ratings and failing markets is really evident of their talent.
Well I like music and Sirius is like FM radio.
Howard pack it in years ago and should just retire.
XM has horrible sound quality.
Sirius has horrible sound quality.
XM's equipment is lightyears ahead of that Sirius junk.

blah blah on and on... Like people get upset if someone "insults" their satrad.

That's pretty good, you just accurately summed up about 10,000 posts in lees than ten lines.

In my area, XM coverage is way better, but personally, I like the Sirius Content better. On the merger, only one side's shaeholders have approved it, right? Has the other side voted yet?

The merger will be good for consumers, not bad. You will continue using the same equipment but certain content will be shared between the companies. There will also be a tier system so you can chose what you want to pay for content wise.

If they merger is shot down both companies will fold, neither can go it alone..Hell even if they merger I have my doubts if the new company can survive...

But damn the way the government is taking its time ruling on this merger you would think this is the biggest merger in the history of corporate America!

The government is still trying to grapple with the concept that Satellite radio competes with other forms of entertainment.

Waiting for my 2012 upgrade...

Sure would stink if the merger didn't go through and either or both companies went out of the business. We've come to rely heavily on our satellite radio (we've got XM) especially during baseball season, but really we use it a lot all year round, now.

I agree, there really is nothing else quite like satellite radio, no matter which one (XM or Sirius) you've got.

....OK, here's some more info....In Canada, Sirius passed 500,000 subs on Oct 11th October. They are likely close to 600,000 subs after the Xmas sales season

http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/a.../11/c2636.html

XM only has 350,300 subs in mid-Jan

Sirius is clearly #1 in Canada.

I have Sirius but in the northeast, way too many "acquiring signal" dropouts. Bought it for Howard and love the music but 70's is 70's whether played on one satellite or another.

You get the idea, classical is classical, hip hop is hip hop etc. They both play the same music, no?
