Anyone with Panasonic repair experience know whether the DVD Recorder swap in would fit / work?

Once in a while a question is asked about swapping a Panasonic 2007 or newer digital tuner into an earlier model Panasonic HDD/DVD Recorder that has an analog tuner. The answer is the same; it won't work. See this December 2008 post for more information:

guys, appreciate your help.
I have a Pano DMR-EZ485V that is giving me the "no read" message, and displays the disc symbol on the front screen with/without a dvd loaded.
it makes a clunking cycling noise 5/6x when the tray is closed w/w/o a dvd.

I tried the spindle/lense clean.

It looks like the spindle is too high, but I can't figure out how to take the final dark grey cover to expose the cam assembly.

any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.
any recommended service providers?
thx,
Phil

The cleaning procedures found in the second post in this thread are of no help when one has a failed laser assembly.

I've posted reassembly advice in two of my February 2009 posts in this thread, beginning here:

DigaDo,
thx for the reply!
your posts are much appreciated,
do you think it is a failed Laser assembly, or the mis-alignment?

and, is the Texas panasonic service area the best alternative for repairs?
again, thx for your help!

It is most likely that the laser assembly (optical pick-up) has failed.

The laser lens is loosely suspended in the laser assembly so that it "aligns" itself. There are no end-user adjustments.

Avoid the McAllen Texas Service Center. There are a number of McAllen "horror stories" that may be found in these pages.

For Panasonic service send a private message to mickinct. See this thread:

I have a BD65 (Blu-Ray player) that all of a sudden stopped working with DVD and Blu-Ray disks. I wouldn't consider it a heavy-use machine. Oddly enough, it seems to still be able to play a MP3/CDRW no problem. DVDs and blu-rays both fail with noread / check the disk / incompatible disk type errors after the machine attempts to identify the type of disk (and fail).

Based on information in this forum, I checked (and cleaned -- even though they looked amazingly clean) the rubber around the spindle and the lens.

When a disk is inserted, it makes the normal noises of the read assembly going back and forth and the disk spinning up. When I put a disk in it, (with the cover off the drive) I can see that the red laser definitely works, I can see through the disk that the mechanism attempts to focus the beam on the disk , and the blue laser does light up, although it is only on very briefly. The IR wavelength seems to work fine, since the CDRW is playing.

Is there anything left I can do besides go buy another Blu-Ray player? (I'm inclined to avoid panasonic at this point, since this is not the first to suffer a similar fate). These machines can be had for $100 or so, so it's not really worth taking to a repair shop . Suggestions?

Notice the bold-face text from the post:

"1. The first procedure uses saliva to moisten the clear hub area of the underside of a DVD, then place the DVD into the disc tray and allow the DVD to spin-up. Then repeat the procedure. This procedure should remove most of the dust, debris and other soiling from the rubber hub. Then use any of several lens cleaning discs for that purpose..."

Notice the clear hub area of the DVDs in this photo:

philipkoepke, if your machine is making a noise like these, and it sounds like it is from your description, then the laser emitter has burned out and will need to be replaced.

Like DigaDo has said, avoid the McAllen Service Center with extreme prejudice! The way to get your machine working again is through MICKINCT. He has repaired several of my machines with complete satisfaction, and excellent communication. Considering the model of your machine (EZ485V) it might not be worth the cost of the repair. You might consider one of these instead. They are a much superior machine, though they lack a tuner.

You moisten your finger(I use middle right finger) then while holding the DVD upside down in your left hand I run my finger around the bottom inside spindle area, then immediately put the disc in the tray and close it.
I've been doing this for years with a couple DVDRs with no adverse effects smile.gif If you put too much saliva on the spindle you'll notice several fine lines emanating from the spindle and going straight out to the edge of the DVD, this doesn't happen if you use just a film.
Again if your getting the chugging no disc read error this procedure will not work, thats a bad laser, this procedure is just for curing the grinding noise and provides just enough traction for the spindle to hold the disc.
Lastly do NOT use this procedure with Taiyo Yuden DVDs as they are already slightly tactile(grippy) and saliva might actually make matters worse. If your discs are grinding and you use something other than Tys then just switching to Tys will probably work just fine.

Thank you for this recommendation.  My drive was the rumbling noise during high speed recording so much that I had to use 1x speed to complete a recording.  I thought the drive was going to be destroyed.  This did indeed resolve the problem.  I would not have guessed that what I saw was "dirty".  I bought this unit used and would suspect the dust buildup comes from using dusty disks that have been sitting out.  Thanks again.

I would also suggest selecting the "silent mode" setting for high-speed dubbing. That will reduce the demands upon the laser without appreciably increasing the duration of high-speed dubbing.
