Are you sure it's a 640?

Any reason I shouldn't go for it?

Taking a second look at it again, I think this might not be a 640 after all. The 640 has a noticeable rectangular help function button in the middle of the recorder, just below the HDD/DVD indicator lights as seen on Pioneer's website:

Pioneer DVR-640H-S image

Also, the 640 has three silkscreened logos to the left of the record button. The one that the seller has looks more like a DVR-450H-S up close. The 450 lacks the help button and there are four silkscreened logos to the left of the record button as seen here:

Pioneer DVR-450H-S image

The fourth logo on the 450 that is not on the 640 is HDMI. Like I said before, it's always a good idea to contact the seller for more information about the item being sold. Better yet, go see it in person. I would ask the seller if it's the 450 recorder. The 450 is the Costco version of the 550 sold at Best Buy and Future Shop. The 450 would have a better encoder than the 640, but I think the 450 is missing the USB port to plug in a USB keyboard to rename your recordings. Hopefully the recorder does not have any hidden major defect. The price is right for me and is similar to the 550 I have. IMO I would jump on it, but too bad I can't fly over to buy it. Only you can decide if it's worth getting.

I'm going to let this thread fade into history, beginning next month. It's been fun. Besides, I should leave room for more important postings such as replacing burners and hard drives in these recorders. Until then, here's some more deals:

Pioneer Elite DVR-57H for $160.00
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/ele/2341272924.html

Pioneer DVR-533H-S for $40.00
Says Panasonic in the ad, but that's a Pioneer in the photos. Better check with seller.

Sonar HDD/DVD recorder for $50.00
80GB hard drive.
http://abbotsford.en.craigslist.ca/ele/2340415804.html

Toshiba RD-XS32 for $35.00
http://alberta.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-s...AdIdZ277100910

Toshiba RD-XS32 for $40.00
Problem burning to DVD-R discs.

I also enjoy the effort em-t-wallitt puts into this thread and I also shall miss any further postings. I do understand that your effort must take up a lot of your time and that's probably the reason you want to stop - if so, I can't blame you but as said above I appreciate your contributions into this thread.

I'm wondering how you do it? Do you have some type of program that you run that automatically scans all the various Craigslist.org sites or do you do it totally manually? However you do it you seem to be able to keep track of new listings as well as price drops, impressive indeed. I always find it a game to see if I can notice my local deals before you post them, I'd say it's about 50/50 that I'll spot a deal before you post it, again impressive

It's all manual searching. I browse through most of the city links in all 50 US states and major Canadian cities. These links I open in multiple tabs in my web browser. The important links I copy into a text editor for reference. Price drops are easy to spot when you've seen the postings before. But yeah, this is eating into my editing time with my Pioneers. I think everyone can see by now that you don't need spend tons of cash to get a good working recorder. For those gems that aren't available on Craigslist, there's always eBay for more money, of course.

Thanks Super Eye, sure makes searching easier.
Thanks to your second search link(seems to work better for me) it looks like a EH-50 going for $40 in Madison WI, if only it were 300 miles closer
http://madison.craigslist.org/emd/2317279175.html
I did note that both searches seem to have some fairly outdated listings. The second search shows a EH-50 I bought many weeks ago that the author deleted immediately but it still shows up??? but not on my local search....

I've been lurking to monitor price trends, and also wanted to thank em-t-wallitt for his effort with this experiment (and some great tips he's given us this year).

For future reference, the 450 is indeed the 550 without USB or DV connections, the followup 460 is exactly the same as a 560 and does include the USB and DV ports. All the x50 and x60 models are incredible, the best Pioneers made, noticeably better PQ than the previous 640.

Hopefully the recorder does not have any hidden major defect.

For $50, I'm betting dead burner or HDD issues. Even broken, for $50 it could be worth sinking another $200 into it to replace the burner (considering the $300-400 they fetch on eBay). A cheap x50 or x60 can be a huge bargain if the seller is dumping it due to HDD hiccups: this is almost always the result of loosened SATA cables (pop the cover, reseat the cables, the unit works good as new). Just figured I'd note this stuff, since this thread is winding down: happy hunting, friends!

Just wanted to thank poster "Em-T-Wallit" for providing these listings over several months.

Presently returning from a road-trip to Vancouverf, B.C. Canada. Snagged a Sony RDR-HX715 that was listed by "Em-T-Wallitt" in his aggreagation of Craigslistings.

Verified some basic functions, but not all prior to purchase.

Very sweet deal. I have an earlier version of the Sony that is still going strong.

I ran a Panny Toshiba and LG into the ground over the last six years. Thank you to the other posters that have posted repair suggestions. Will implement as possible.

The Polaroid would be worth buying for the remote alone. Almost. None of the referb ones that were available a whille back had the original remote, and the remote they came with did not have many of the functions.

I too want to thank em-t-wallitt for the efforts he has put into this thread. As a lurker, I was always reading it to see what was available, and what prices were being asked. I will miss this thread when it's gone.

This might only need a routine rubber hub cleaning to restore it to functionality.

Guy said no to $30.

Honestly, at this stage in the game, two years after going the 1080p HD HTPC route, my attachment to these machines is more sentimental than practical. I'd really only be getting one as a curio museum piece, to complement my pair of Toshiba RD-XS35s, which despite being top feature machines I love, I barely use anymore except for the occasional VHS or DV dub and as a (still-functioning!) TVGOS HDD recorder backup in case I don't manage to get a show on my HTPC, which I always do.

In a similar vein, I also have a functional 1935 RCA Victor D22-1 Superheterodyne.
