Most of the folks on the net use the USA Philips made DVDR3575H 160GB HDD.
I have the DVDR3590H with internal 250 GB HDD. PAL Region (Netherlands).
It's the same as DVDR3595H, only that has HDMI out, or a black color (3597H)

Very important to know is:
-Latest firmware is 3.08
-It records in DVD+VR format
-With AC3 sound, so if you don't have the codec's it won't play on pc
-If less than 5% HDD space, machine autmatically deletes recordings, starting from the LATEST, or the one on top (depending on view). Lost important stuff through this.
-Cannot forward MP3 files, both on HDD or on disc. A shame Philips!
-Cannot writeback multiple < XX min files. If recorder displays 6 min left and i try to burn a 5 min file, won't work. Seems to be a restriction or something.
-Has weird playback on 16:9 conversion to 4:3 tv's. Not always letterbox is displayed, but only scweezed image (small rectangle heads of humans).

-WAIT WAIT WAIT on this latest 3.08 firmware. If you don't wait before the thumbnail is playing in HDD list mode, then the final recording on the disk is NOT working. See screenshot below.
-Filenames can be very long. IF you edit after burning to disk, it says "UPDATE DISK". Most standalone DVD players have errors if the disk is edited.
-Not all dvd players can skip the hidden chapters. On 3575H USA model, they can be removed, on this European models only HIDDEN (blue).
-Some DVD players display time code (recorded by videocamera) on the right bottom side. Cannot be turned of, is depending on your dvd player.
-Windows Media Player, VLC, and others have playback issues with the dvd's made on this recorder. VLC is crashing, WMP doesn't display menu titles and so on.
Screenshot:

-USA firmware hotkeys to display service menu's won't work (As described on AVSforum.com)

-I have soon the service manuals, thanks to user DigaDo.

Have a screenshot right here:

Spot the X thumbnail. That title doesn't play, or takes upto 15min to load.

As you will find when you open the Philips European Service Manual for models 3575, 3577, 3595 and 3597, these models use different software and utilities than North American models. That Service Manual runs to 172 pages--fully 156 of those pages cover the software and utilities.

Thanks for that. Now i need to spot the RS232. Since the service manual says needs a special cable (described in chapter 4A.2) But that chapter doesn't exist!

WOW, i opened up the case of my DVDR3590H. Seems that there is a DVDR3570H board in it. Complicated as hell.
I couldn't locate the servicepins, and while taking out the fan, i destroyed one of the screwholes, so the screw turns loose.
Too bad, but not lost. I located the parts and written em down:

-Board: Lecoplusstep board
-Harddrive: Seagate 250 GB DB35.3 ST3250920ACE with firmware 3.ACD (Date 08063). 8MB cache i think.
Special DVR equipped harddisk. Dynaplay® Technology for low power consumption, harddrive security and timeshift features.
Datasheet here: http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/data...b35_7200_3.pdf
Product sheet here: http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/marketing/po_db35.pdf
Technology paper: http://www.seagate.com/content/pdf/w...5_DynaPlay.pdf
Data Sectors: http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/s...100427568b.pdf

-Fan: Delta Electronics DSB0612MA 12v 0.15A
Product sheet from here:
http://www.aboveboardelectronics.com...an/dsb6025.htm
-Optical drive: www.asatech.cc
-Tuner: Samsung TCSM0601PD025P
-2x Elpida D2508AETA-5B-E 0704097LG000 chips. These are 256Mbit DDR SDRAM memory chips.
Datasheet:
http://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datashe.../datasheet.pdf

Boot sequence on play button:
-Harddrive only

Boot sequence on Standby/On button
-Harddrive
-Optical drive
-Fan

The fan is weak, sleeve bearing, and has low air-flow.

Various Sea Star stickers are all over the place.

Going to open up my case once more, to look after the RS232 port.
Inspected the newer DVDR5570/5520H series. Look almost the same as the 35xx series, except for DVB-T board inside and some changes onto the chips (more ram).

The newer series (and last European series) are the HDR38xx series. Produced in 2008 and 2009. Contain speedy SATA HDD's, all Mediatek chipset inside, and much smaller and newer HDMI ports standard.
No service mode there, BUT you get firmware in a BIN file, which can be decrypted. I believe it's the MT8158 chipset.

Have all the service stuff here.

Hi there W00fer,

I also own a Philips DVDR3597h/31 (Dutch).
The latest firmware version what I could find is the 3.06 version (Dutch Philips site). Which is installed and running on the machine.
I'm very interested in the 3.08 version, is it downloadable?

Do you know if there are any possibilities convert/upgrade the build-in analogue tuner into a DVB-T Tuner?

Buy a second hand DVDR5570/5520H, then replace all the components, except the Hard Drive, the Burner, and maybe the fan on the chasis of your DVDR3597h/31.

Before that, get the service manuals (or diagrams) of both models, that will be very usefull to check the hardware compatibility.

Thanks for the info, I was already hunting for the second hand 5570H.
Do you know where I could find the 3.08 verson of the firmware.

Could you help me out to find the 3597h/31 Service Manual. Tried to Google for it, but no luck yet.

Thanks

So I have bought myself a spare DVDR3570H and I located the service port 1404. Now going to buy a cable so I can do the command line interface.

Aso the dissasembly was easier than I thought. The hardddrive is thinner though that I expected so probably a normal one won't fit perfectly.

But first I'm going to read out this one and see what I can find.

If somebody needs a service manual for these series PM me.
