I haven't looked in on the forum here in a few months, but have been busy using our Mvox 2160A & even managed to introduce my brother's kids to the 3 Stooges!

The 2160A gets used daily, if only for watch & delete, and has made some strange HD noises off & on for a month or two. I'd always figured if the 2160 died I'd first buy a new MVox 515 & then see about replacing the HD in the 2160. I've really wanted a 515, but didn't feel I could justify buying so long as the 2160 was working well.

BUT: Looked in tonight & it seems the 515's are being discontinued & current stocks are already gone! WM site says none online, J&R says 515 refurbs out of stock. WM does have the 513 in stock. That's a lot better than nothing, but I'd really rather have a 515.(Factoid: we are on analog cable with no box of any kind, cable runs straight into the 2160- no problems with it, but there are reports here of this setup causing problems with some 515 units. Any thoughts?)

I will, of course, send both email & paper letter to WM as suggested in the thread here. But for now: Does anyone know of a normal-priced source for the 515- or whether we can count on any more 515 units showing up at WM or J&R? Should I just keep looking in on the WM & J&R websites & trust to luck? Or should I hurry & order a 513 from WM before those disappear too?

Yes.

Best case scenario: A small supply of 515s shows up within the WM 90-day return window of your 513. If they don't, most likely they never will.

I have multiple 515s set up straight from analog cable and have no problems. (Except Time Warner blacking out some stations the digital tuner could previously pick up.)

OK, thanks! I'll order a 513 today. If the 515 shows up later I may just get one of those too, should keep things going for years to come!

Check your cooling fan. My fan was making an awful noise. The replacement fan from Funai is inexpensive and not too hard to replace.

There is a firmware update for the 515 that can be loaded in the 513. It makes the 513 interface identical to the 515. The only difference between a 515 and updated 513 is the HDD size, remote, and settings retention time during power failures.

Fan Replacement Info here.
Firmware Update Info here.

New MVox 513 ordered from WM, I even sprang for the $2.97 shipping since driving to the WM & back will take over $10 worth of gas. Still came in under $250 with tax. Gotta research the firmware update now- if it will allow me to name programmed recordings- ie, so the thumbnail shows the name, say, abc123, instead of "Feb 2x 11:00 am", I'll risk it!

And don't forget that you can also replace the hard drive in the 513 with a 500gb drive, and once it "initializes" the new drive, with the new firmware it essentially IS a 515.

Thanks- I may try to wind up with 2 515 semi-clones. My plan now is to order 2 500GB hard drives from somewhere(1 for old 2160, 1 for new 513), and from Funai 2 cooling fans(one for 2160, the other for a spare) & maybe a 515 remote.(SATA adapters for HD transplant? Gotta look that up) If I can just get someone to share a 515 serial # so Funai will sell me a 515 remote!

Then make sure the new 513 works OK as-is, then firmware. For the 2-yr old 2160A, a new fan, new HD, firmware update- & we'll see. I've burned a little over 400 disks on the 2160, maybe the laser & drive will last a while longer.

Don't believe you'll need an adapter for the 513, but I'm fairly sure the original 2160 won't take a SATA drive without an adapter.

Might want to check out Wajo's posts (at the start of the thread?) about upgrading the machines. He'll have the info about getting a new drive initialized and the details about the type of drives each machine can take.

You shouldn't need a 515 SN anymore. I fought for months with CS and Funai about that and they should NOW be able to look up the 515 Remote PN (NC003UD) w/o first getting a 515 SN. The advice from Funai is to ask for uit directly and, if the CSR can't/won't sell you one separately, ask to speak to a supervisor.

Here's the help file on replacing parts/HDD.

Mike, As of 2.24 J&R has both the 515 and the 513, both refurbs, in stock again, for $199 and 4169, respectively. Free shipping.

Thanks for posting that information. I ordered a 515 an hour ago.

Me too! About 3:35 today. Now I'll have to return the unopened 513 to WM, but that's doable. I have to go to Longview next Fri or Sat anyway, I can just return it to a store there. Eating the $2.97 shipping is cheap enough to move up to a 515. Sure hope that 515 refurb has a 515 remote with it, & not a 2160A/513 remote.

If the unit was "defective," they should return all your cost, inc. shipping.

FYI- the new M-vox 513 ordered online from WM arrived today. I was surprised to see it was shipped in its retail packaging box only, no protective outer box. Looks to be in very good shape though, FedEx did well. I still plan to return it to WM unopened when the 515 Refurb arrives from J&R.

Now to work up a shopping list for Funai parts, & try to mod my 2-yr old 2160A into a 515 clone, & keep both machines going for a few more years. Lessee: a 515 remote(can supply my own Ser# now!), coupla fuses, coupla fans, maybe a burner unit. From somewhere, a 500GB HD for the 2160A.

Hard drive$ are expen$ive right now. Would a Funai Parts dept. 515 hard drive plug & play in a 2160A? Might there be any bargains w/Funai parts, compared to current open-market high hard drive prices? Or maybe just wait till summer & hope prices drop, since there's no real hurry on getting a new HD?

HDDs can be interchanged between 2160A, 513 and 515 w/o any other SATA adapters beyond the one in each machine. I'd wait for prices to come down on new HDDs. I don't know if Funai parts supplies HDDs, never asked.

I'm not that great technically, but I have swapped out 3 2160A drives for Hitachi 500mb drives.

I bought them used from EBAY. Been recording every day for about a year w/o any problems. They go for about $40 plus shipping there.

This was to be fully expected. They will likely go up even further as they get more and more scarce.

The Mvox 515 Refurb from J&R arrived today, haven't opened it yet but can't wait! I'm curious to see how much run time it has, gotta look up the procedure for that.("Skip something or other", yes?) I'll cross my fingers & hope it's one of those less-than-10-hour units.

My new 513 is still unopened, sitting on the hearth, waiting for the warranty-repair 27" CRT TV to return to Sears. I'll wait till then to make a trip to Longview & return the Mvox 513. No idea whether WalMart will return it to their stock or send it to ReFurb heaven at J&R. It didn't arrive as unscathed as I'd first thought though, there's a big tear in one of the top flaps on the box- it just stays closed naturally.
