Look at the users manual, page 60, bottom of the page. It says:
To change the setting all at once (PAL!#NTSC)
While stopped, keep pressing [STOP] and [ OPEN/CLOSE] on the
main unit at the same time for 5 or more seconds.
Since the problem went away when you put in an NTSC DVD and played it, I would guess that they might have done a master reset which will (I think) put the machine back into PAL mode. When you played an NTSC DVD, it will putput NTSC signals, even if the mode selected is PAL, so that is a clue.
