Sony clearly believes that archiving on optical discs is the ideal solution for years to come. Not tape, not hard-drives, not memory sticks but optical discs. At the moment this is meant for Sony's broadcast and pro production clients. But according to this April 17 2012 article by Tom's Hardware Sony will be pushing this for consumer use as well.

Here is a quote.
Quote:

Sony said that it is also organizing an Optical Disc Archive Advisory Group to promote the adoption of this new storage format. It's open to participation by media and entertainment companies from across the globe to further build the market for video image archive solutions.

In addition to the commercial products, Sony will push for companies and consumers to transfer their video content stored on old-school linear tape to the company's new format.

At this point it's more of a PC ADD ON but if it takes off for consumer use maybe a stand-alone machine will emerge.

Here is the fresh April 16 2012 Sony press release.

I would guess this system is based on Sony's professional disc system (XDCam) which has been in use by various broadcast and pro production clients since 2004.

This makes sense to me, considering what can sometimes happen to hard drives.

I've also had a very bad experience with a flash drive, so those aren't exactly the ideal solution either. They can also suddenly fail.

Tape? Tell me another one. Those are even worse.
