I recently sent in a Panasonic EZ475V to Panasonic's McAllen Repair Center. I had called Panasonic, asked for "repairs", and got a recording. All the recording gave wasnthe McAllen address-- no mention of cost. I had read here awhile back that a repaired or refurbished one would be $125, which was fine.

A week after sending it in, I got a call from McAllen saying it would cost $255, and that $45 was already non-refundable due to diagnostic testing. This isn't fine, since I used to pay $250 or less for brand new ones! I'd prefer to just buy a new one, but obviosly I can't, because they've stopped making them!

Is $255 really the new cost for repairs/ refurbs? Are there any cheaper repair/ refurb alternatives now or in the future?

Also, if I can find another brand of DVD recorder to buy, will it play my old DVD-R DVDs that had been recorded on my Panas?

Only another Panasonic will play unfinalized Panasonic discs, I'd keep an eye out on Craigslist for used Panasonics. IMO '05 and '06 ES/EH series are the best, I'd really avoid the '07 EZ-x7 series(such as yours) they tend to be the most problematic.
Any DVD player should play your finalized DVDs, if your willing to switch brands for any further recordings then the Magnavox HDD DVDRs have proven to be quite reliable and would be your best bet for a DVDR that has a built in digital tuner.
Check the first post of Wajos sticky thread on the Magnavox for a wealth of information.

I second that about Mike. He's repaired two machines for me, quickly, at reasonable prices. Best part is they work great after he works on them.

Jumping in here to recommend mickinct. My DMREH75VS went bad (DVD player issue). Got it fixed up but then there were other issues at the same time with U99 and other error codes, turns out the HDMI and component video out would not work ... issue with an internal board that is no longer manufactured. Mike took care of me and was in touch throughout. So, I'm SOL on the unit but I was in good hands with Mike. Highly recommended.

Since you are posting here, just PM him. He has written the second post in this thread, so just hover over his name and box of options will appear, one of them is "Send PM".

PM means "Personal Message" which means it will go right to him and him alone. Provide your phone number in the PM and he will likely call you direct. You can see your messages by looking at the top right hand part of the screen near your user name where it will list the number of messages that you have.

Thanks for that explanation. I didn't realize that tomindal had only one post, so he might not be familiar with the process. Good call.

For safety and privacy reasons, it's probably not wise to publicly post your email address.  cool.gif

I just wanted to say, if you ever need a Panasonic recorder fixed, and at a reasonable price, use Mike (mickinct on this board).

He's fixed a few for me in the past, but the latest one, well, he went above and beyond.

I had an E500 chock full of old movies I'd never gotten around to watching, or to off load onto discs. Over Christmas it just died. I contacted Mike and sent him the unit, explaining how the content on the drive was much more vital to me than the machine itself.

He worked on it for hours, but eventually reached a point where the unit was prompting him to format the hdd. Knowing the content was what I really wanted saved, he called me before he did that format, and as we talked about what he had tried, in addition to what I had tried before sending it to him, a light went off in his head, and he said he wanted to try one more thing. He said he'd call me back and hung up.

About 30 minutes later, he called with great news. That last idea had worked, and he was reading me the names of my movies from my hdd!

So now my machine is winging its way back to me, movies included.

This experience has reinforced my high opinion of Mike.

It also taught me to put my old movies on discs!

I am trying to get in touch with mickinct for have two Panasonic DMR-EZ48V recorders.  Have made a lot of discs using them for had Samsung two of them and always had troubles with format, etc.  Had them repaired and had the same problems show up again.  Just was strange that both my Panasonic DMR-EZ48V's got the same problem of No Read for blank discs but recorded discs play fine.  I have the going from cable box thru the Panasonic to the TV so if I want to record a show to watch later when have the time I can do so.  Do not see anyway to hook it up to the TV to play the discs and still have the cable box hooked up so that is the easy way to do it but have to have the Panasonic on and to get the picture on the TV.  Want to know how to get in contact with you so can see what the costs would be and where to ship them to.  Don't want to buy another model or brand for have figured out how to use them and would have to learn a different model that would not work the same way.  Contact me at Screwyjohn62649@yahoo.com with information to contact you.

He usually is hanging around here. Try sending him a private message. Just hover the mouse pointer over his name in the post just above yours, and select SEND PM. He is very good about these things, and quite prompt.

I am trying to get in touch with mickinct for a Panasonic DMR-EZ?? something recorder that needs mending. I realize now those are not the best line machines but that is water under the bridge now.

When I try to send a private message to him, I get a message that says I need to post at least 15 posting before I am allowed to send a PM. I don't have anything near that. SOOOOO ... how to I get in touch with Mick in CT another way?

Thanks,

they still make them but are rebranded to another "brand" since i found the Panasonic controller module inside the machine. latest machine I know of is 2011 with digital tuner i don't want to revile the brand yet since I don't want the prices to explode before i can buy a bunch of them first. I expect the prices to go UP significantly once reviled

Dolby, DTS symbols with the panasonic name on it yeah that chip

right now they are going for about 50-100$ which is significantly cheaper then getting one of these units repaired

I going to record a disc in a panasonic unit to comfirm that the rebrand is a panasonic this will be the only way to tell for sure
