I'm wondering if the FW and HDD is upgradable on the Mag 2080. It only has and 80GB HD lacks some of the other features of later models of these recorders. I can't find any info on upgrading this early model on this forum although there is plenty info on the later models that leads one to think that it is indeed upgradable to 500GB. If anyone is familiar with this early model PLEASE advise. ty

DigaDo replaced his 2080's 80GB HDD with a 160GB, as described in #2 here.

I don't know of anyone who's put a 500GB in their 2080, but I "suspect" it might work like is does in the 3575/3576? YMMV.

Thanks wajo for your response to my question. I have access to this model machine and with low mileage and was wondering if it would be worth upgrading. It doesn't have the hdmi output so no upscaling but aside from that could you tell me if the machine is basically the same as later generations. Also, do you know if the FW updates for the 513 would work on this machine or is a FW update necessary when adding larger HD?

No special FW has been reqd for any of the other models to upgrade the HDD, the FW has been written to allow a 500GB capacity. I just don't know if the 2080 also allows 500GB but I suspect it does, just can guarantee like on the other units that HAVE been upgraded to 500GB. I know you can go to 160GB for sure... 500GB would be a first and very cool "experiment" as well as helpful to other 2080 users?

The only user-updateable FW I know that MIGHT work in the 2080 is a single FW update from Funai for the 3575. There never were any user updates for the next PATA-based unit, the 2160. The following units starting with the 2160A are all SATA-based un its soi their FW would lilkely not be uploadable. You probably don't need a FW upgrade just for trying a 500GB HDD, so the 3575 FW update would only be a fall-back option to try in case the 2080 FW was different in some respect from the 3575/3576/2160, which all allowed a 500GB upgrade.
