Does anyone know if the disc drives of these units are the same OR interchangeable?

No, these DVD Drives cannot be interchanged.

The DMR-ES40 is a 2005 model with the large black plastic DVD Drive VXY1867 with the on-board controller board.

The DMR-ES35 is a 2006 model with the the metal case DVD Drive VXY1916 (or VXY1972) where the controller board is built into the external Digital PCB.
