Im looking for a DVD recorder that will record my favorite programs from TWC like speed channel, food, disc, hist, etc. The main thing is if there is a DVD recorder that will allow you to download to a external hard drive or store them on it instead of using a disc. (Dont want to spend $100s of dollars on discs.)
Heres what i want to do:
Want to use-

Or if anyone can find any better deals on DVD recorders just show the link and give your review of it if you own one.

-On the amazon link it says the DVD recorder doesnt have a tuner, what would a tuner be necessary for?

If you have a TWC converter box or DVR you don't necessarily need a DVD recorder with a tuner. The TWC converter box or DVR tunes the "channels." The Toshiba DR430 is a "garden-variety" DVD recorder that records from line inputs, those being the S-Video or yellow composite video plus white and red audio inputs. I have a Toshiba DR410 (a 2008 version of the DR430) but it's used only to play DVDs with the family viewing TV.

The "better deal" is a Magnavox 5xx series HDD/DVD Recorder. I have seven of these (and earlier versions) set up for daily use.

The first post in Wajo's sticky thread is the gateway to a wealth of information concerning Magnavox HDD/DVD Recorders:

Does not exist. There is no DVD recorder on the market that has the capability of off-loading its content other than by burning a disc. You can then use a PC to read the disc and transfer the contents to an external HDD. If you want to record and go straight to an external disk, get a PC tuner like Hauppauge, Ceton or Silicon Dust and use your PC to do the recording.
