I purchased a Magnavox MDR533H online from Walmart. When I connected it to my Cox cable service and performed an autoscan on "cable analog/digital" it stored all 63 of the of the analog channels but only about 12 or 13 of the available 31 cable digital (QAM) channels that I receive on my Sony TV. Of the channels it did store, the channel numbers were different than those shown on the TV. I returned the unit to Walmart for a full refund since it did not pick up the DTV channels I was interested in recording. I thought it had a defective tuner.
Since then I have read various accounts of this problem and possibly some fixes. Before I order another recorder I would like to find a clearcut description of the problem and any applicable solution, if there is one. The digital cable channels as displayed on my Sony TV are as follows (in order): 71.39, 72.17, 72.76, 73.57,73.82, 98.1, 98.5, 117, 119.3, 693.23, 694.23, 695.23, 696.15, 697.27, 699.27,702.13, 703.3,705.27, 709.23, 710.10, 713.7, 714.44, 715.15, 716.55, 720.13, 1004, 1012, 1013, 1022 and 1023. Lost my list of channels the recorder detected, but two of them corresponded to 98.1 and 119.3 even though they showed different channel numbers.
If there is no solution for this problem is there another recorder with similar capabilities that doesn't require subscriptions like TIVO, et.al?
Eagerly awaiting responses,

Try reading the last couple hundred posts of this thread. A huge fraction of the posts are from people with problems tuning cable.

You might want to also look at these two posts in that thread. You might find your answers there:

Channel numbers on a funai recorder will never completely match the numbers you will see with a TV tuner. You will have to keep a paper list to correspond them.
And your only other options are a TiVo with cable card (TiVo does NOT require a subscription if you buy it up front for full price) or a Media-PC with clear QAM or cable card tuners.
Then again, you could always just bite the bullet and rent the cable co DVR.

The bitterness of poor quality lasts long after the sweetness of the low price is forgotten . . . life is too short to drink bad wine
