Magnavox 2160A

I am really, really getting crushed by Black Crush. It seems to be getting worse, or perhaps that's my imagination. Or perhaps lighting directors think it's really artsy to NOT light the scenes as brightly as they used to. Or maybe tv stations as a result of introducing digital sub channels are swiping bits from their main Hi Def broadcasts to feed to their younglings. I don't know. But I sincerely hope that should Funai grant us another model in their recorder line, they can find a way to eliminate the problem. The Panasonic recorders had settings that allowed you to select a brightness level for recordings.

Honestly, the images produced can be entirely too dark. Heads disappear into solid dark shapes where clothes are meant to be. Hands pop out of nowhere...And worst of all, Black actors with darker complexions, fare badly in some scenes, rendering them nearly invisible. Especially if they're in the foreground. There seems to be a sweet spot where they look best, but if they move too far into the back or foreground, they get shrouded in darkness. They should swipe John Cena's catch phase...''You CAN'T see me?!!'' eek.gif rolleyes.gif

Naturally, the COMMERCIALS that run during the shows are nice and crispy bright-all the better to see what they want you to buy....

I made some screencaps of a couple of shows, using TMPG DVD Author, and VLC Player.

Arrow.

Oliver Queen doesn't need to wear a mask in Star City, because with a Magnavox...nobody can see his face!

Beauty and the Beast

C'mon...it's broad daylight! Why are they so dark-in daylight???!

Beauty (aka Catherine) turns her head-and poof! it vanishes! In BROAD DAYLIGHT!

To be Continued...

Grimm

There are 3 people in each scene. I wouldn't be so Grimm if I could actually see them. wink.gif

Person of Interest

Wouldn't it be more interesting, if you could clearly see everyone? tongue.gif

Elementary

My dear Watson, how do you expect me to deduce the clues in such dark images-in broad daylight?!

(Alright, this weeks episode took place during a storm related power outage, but scenes during the day and in the SNOW, still turned out crushed). biggrin.gif

Please help us Funai/DVD Recorder Gods...Anybody! Save us from Black Crush! redface.gif

I've had the same problem with my 2160A, even if you compare its records to my old Crapsumg DVD recorder, which was great for a few months. Obviously the Funai is much better than my reliable LG DVD recorder, with its cheap encoder video chips.

Somehow my 513 works better.

So, the newer models do indeed, produce brighter images? How'd I miss that?? I forgot to mention I also have a Magnavox combo ZV457MG9, and pq is identical. I'd really hate to buy one and wind up with the same problem.

What kind of display do you have? They all dim with age, except for DLP. Have you tried your recordings on other displays?

Watching on different TVs, the picture quality is the same-dark. Lol. That was my first thought, so I trucked discs around to other rooms, and even a couple of relatives houses.

They're that dark on all of them. Including old CRT sets too.

There's lots of new shows that have real dark black levels. From what I've read people want dark black levels, but there's more black crush. You can't turn brightness up on a plasma as it throws off the gamma on bright screens.

SUBJECT: Cannot Find a Recent, Similar Post on This Topic
.
Within the last month or two, I thought that I read a post by Church AV Guy discussing the Black Level problem, mentioning that "7.5 number" along with a flip-flopping to a 'Reverse Mirroring Off Color' image when the scene got extremely dark. I meant to reply that I found it odd that this was the first time, AFAIK, this topic was mentioned and that I'm experiencing the same problem on my 2160As (recording ClearQAM from FiOS), but let it go and then forgot about it until today.

All I could find with Advanced Search was this Westly-C thread.

Does anyone remember the 'other' thread / post? If so, would you please post a LINK.

Thanks! smile.gif

Sorry, but it wasn't me.
