The recorder has the message "NOdISC" and will not open. When I press the open button, it shows "Open" for a few seconds (but the tray doesn't move) and then the "NOdISC" message. Is this an issue with the laser assembly or something else? Just wondering if it's worth pursuing a fix. Thanks.
Have you tried assisting the tray open?
Sounds like it may be trying to open but cannot for some reason(broken belt, worn idler, etc.).
IMO if you can't fix it yourself it's not worth fixing. The EZ-17 was problematic when new and only gets worse with time. For a replacement I'd check Craigslist.org or even local pawn/second hand shops.
Someone in my Craigslist market has had a second hand EZ-17 for sale for several weeks for $45, if it were the slightly better EZ-28 I may have been interested but I've just had too much bad luck with the EZ-17 models to even try. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/ele/3674820044.html
Thanks for the info. It doesn't make any noise whatsoever - I don't hear anything mechanical happening at all. I assume it's toast but was wondering if anyone else familiar with these units had something similar happen. There's an ES-20 for sale in my area - not sure if those are any better/worse.
IMO the EZ-17/27 and combo cousin EZ-47v were Panasonics worst DVDRs.....seconded only by the ES-20 and the ES-20s cousin the combo ES-40v. Panasonic has made some great DVDRs but I'd really avoid those.
The best models would probably be the '05 and '06 models(again with the exception of the ES-20/40v models). If you wanted the digital tuner then the EZ-28 would probably be your best choice.
