O.K., I know that this is not the appropriate forum for posing this question, but it's the only forum which will have me as a member, so I'll flout authority and ask anyway: Comcast has finally encrypted and STB'd my local channels, so I'd like to put an antenna in my attic to receive HDTV signals (from only one direction) that are circa 50 miles away. Can anyone suggest such an antenna (preferably from Walmart so that I can return it if not optimal)?

My Walmart store now carries an attic antenna. Check your store?

I'm pretty sure this online one is the same as in-store.

Might need an amp?

One reviewer said he didn't get 3 channels with this but switched to the amp'd RCA antenna for 4-cents more (this one?) and got them all.. however, it says it has a lower advetised ("over 30 miles") range?

.
  1. Go to "Antennaweb.Org, enter your address and find out what type of antenna they suggest.
    .
  2. Per my conversation just this afternoon with a Solid Signal Tech, DOUBLE the distance (i.e. up to 50% signal loss from attic vs rooftop installation). So, now you're DEEP FRINGE (i.e. 100+ miles).
    .
  3. Check the available channels displayed on Antennaweb.Org.
    Are they:
    1. UHF only?
      .
    2. UHF plus High-VHF?
      .
    3. UHF plus both High-and-Low-VHF?
.
IMHO, the antenna LINKed by wajo is a waste of your money. frown.gif Just by looking at it, I'd guess that it's UHF ONLY, good for up to 25 miles IF rooftop mounted.

50 miles from an in-attic installation is pushing it, again, IMHO. You'll probably need a pre-amp too.

Take a look in: Local HDTV Info and Reception and see what other folks in your neighborhood are using. Go to SolidSignal.Com, enter your Zip Code and see what folks in neighboring towns are buying. Forget about department store B&Ms (i.e. Walmart, Target, RadioShack). You need a SERIOUS antenna! eek.gif Get multiple opinions BEFORE buying!! wink.gif

Post your Zip Code.

Good Luck! smile.gif

I wonder how many other localities have had all their cable channels scrambled per the new FCC rulings.

I GOOGLE'd "Zip Code Naples FL", got 34101, and entered it in all the sites I found by more GOOGLE'ng. He's got a straight ~45 mile run north. Transmitter Profile Detail shows vertical peaks between the transmitters and 34101, ending in green. Most of his channels are yellow, indicating attic install permissable. But, with ~45 miles, I'd go with a 70+ mile antenna to start due to the "up to 50% loss from attic install"..

Antennas Direct 91XG UHF TV Antenna (91XG)

Luckily, all the major networks are UHF, closely grouped just north of Fort Myers Shores.

I'm surprised that although the OP has logged in multiple times since my reply, he hasn't posted his results. confused.gif

It looks more like a Popular Mechanics project... I mean 50 miles eek.gif... fortunately for him, there aren't many natural obstacles, like mountains. Anyway I guess that won't be a cheap installation, but I support and will be following this thread.

Good luck!

Well, on the bright side, at least it will eliminate all the Clear QAM tuning problems with the funai DVD recorders.

Oh yes, we can all take great solace in that.

Hi JimLely!

I noticed that you re-visited this forum yesterday (Magnavox SUPER Thread - Post #23793), but you still haven't replied to THIS thread from 05/18/13 regarding your 'Attic-Based Antenna' Project. frown.gifredface.gif

Personally, I find it RUDE when someone CREATEs a thread, multiple forum members RESPOND, and then the OP User, although logging onto the AVS Forum MULTIPLE TIMES *AND* replying to OTHER threads since the date of this OP, doesn't bother to reply to this one. redface.gif

Well, EXCEPT for the:

I'm sorry guys but I never realized that there were other responses after Wajo. (I only visit the Maggie thread on this forum.) I'm now reading all of your responses for the first time. I never thought that this misplaced (by me) topic would generate these well-thought-out responses and I am (belatedly) deeply appreciative of them. My sincerest apologies.

I haven't done anymore on this topic since Comcast has not yet (even though they said they had) implemented this change, and that my probability for success in the attic location is so low. I also have DTV so the only channel I really need from Comcast is WGCU-DT2, a PBS alternative station.

Again, my apologies,

Jim
