Most DVD recorders (except some LG's) don't send anything internal (menus, channels, titles, etc.) thru the coax output to your TV... that usually just passes the raw incoming signal to your TV so the TV can tune its own channels.

If your TV has any other connections besides coax (YWR RCA), and your DVD has those same outputs, connect the two together. That should show what your DVD is doing/playing.

Let us know if this helps or not... especially what kind of DVD and what kind of TV you have, and the outputs on the DVD and inputs on the TV.

That's a very bad machine. The reading laser is usually not stronger, so maybe is dead. In that case, use the warranty or just kill it with fire.
