Apparently, three cable companies are vying for TW: Comcast, Cox and Charter, according to this updated story.

I'm not sure this is a sign of the apocalypse, but it is certainly ominous. eek.gif

Okay, I take it back. It nearly IS the Doomsday Scenario. It would give them a clear monopoly and so much leverage it's frightening.

Will it be a monopoly or a monopsony?

Why Comcast / TW need more of your money.

Interesting here that a Comcast spokesperson said this about their "donations": "Why would anyone criticize those types of investments?"

It'd be even more interesting to see their Return-on-Investment (ROI) analyses for these donations.

The DBS forums have some renewed content about the fabled DirecTV/Dish merger. I call it The Beast That Just Won't Die!

There is no escape. The people selling you TV are the same ones selling you Internet. Go ahead. Cut the cable and dance in the streets that you will get your TV free over the Internet. In 5 yr you'll be paying $150 a month for Internet service and get less than what you are getting now. Data caps are already standard with cable Internet. The next advance will be tiered service rates so you can pay for your Internet the same way you pay for your cell phone data plan -- by buying GB's of data per month -- and it won't be cheap.

I think so too!

They might make that their official attitude after the FuCC gives them the go-ahead!

A related story on talks with Charter et al on planning for divestiture of ~3-5 million subs after approval of the merger.

Wonderful how Comcast slows down Netflix steaming, forces Netflix to pay extra to Comcast for improved speeds, and now Netflix raises subscription prices.

It all boils down to the consumer, ESPN and other networks want more money from Comcast and all Comcast does is pass the increase on to the consumer.....and the world goes round and round....

At least Netflix will only pass the increase on to new customers but I wonder how long "a generous time period" is?

As stated in this article http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-04-21/netflix-dips-a-toe-into-higher-prices-starting-with-new-subscribers when NF raised the price in Ireland, the "generous period of time"lasted 2 yrs.

Perhaps the second horseman of the apocalypse has appeared. I have been seeing rumors of AT&T wanting to purchase DirecTV. eek.gif Don't they already have U-Verse? This merger would really be a bad idea. mad.gif I HOPE it is not going to happen--maybe it's just a rumor. rolleyes.gif

In areas where ATT can only supply phone and internet service but not Uverse, direct tv is offered in a bundle with the other services.I only have an ATT landline but I get plenty of literature in the bills alluding to this.I want Uverse but it doesnt look like its coming my way anytime soon.I will probably be doing a bundle with Charter Comm. in the near future.

Same goes for Verizon. If you use copper lines and cannot or won't switch to FIOS they offer DirecTV, phone, Internet bundles.
