Magnavox MDR557H causing shadows on TV

I recently bought the MDR557H from Amazon. Connected it to my Comcast CATV converter and the screen images are now fuzzy. Tried various cable types: RCA and HDMI, but neither equal the video quality before the device was inline. The converter is a Motorola DCT2244/1661/ACDEFG. Would it be worth my while to request a new converter from Comcast? Is there a converter model that has HDMI output?

How did you connect from the converter to the DVDR? Single Rf Coax cable or Y/R/W composite from the converter to the back of the DVDR.

Is this converter the free-bee that Comcast hands out?

The bitterness of poor quality lasts long after the sweetness of the low price is forgotten . . . life is too short to drink bad wine

What type of TV do you have, HDTV or SD tube TV? If a HDTV then you really should get a converter box with HDMI(or at the least component) output. The best input the Magnavox will take is S-video with composite being second best, RF or channel 3 isn't really worth talking about unless you have a very old tube TV that isn't capable of displaying anything better.
Note if you get a HDMI converter box you'll want to do all your live TV watching via HDMI directly from your converter box, the only time you'll watch though the Magnavox's HDMI output is for playing DVDs or things you've recorded and be forewarned HD that you've recorded on the Magnavox won't look nearly as good as live HD directly from your converter box, thats HD whereas anything through the Magnavox will be SD(although it may be upconverted by the Magnavox it's still basically SD at heart).
