Just bought the DRU-510a. It came with firmware 1.0a; first thing i did was to upgrade to firmware 1.0c.

DVD read speed is still very slow; took 45 minutes to read a Simpsons DVD with DVD Decrypter (which reported 2x speed). DVD X Copy was faster, about 33 minutes. The advertisted read time is 16x though. Any ideas on why it's so slow?

I've heard rumor that manufacturers "lock" the read speed to discourage ripping, is this true? If so, any way to unlock them?

Read time for movies are not going to be the same as the read time for a data DVD. You will not read a hour+ movie in just a matter of minutes, like it would a data DVD.
Not to mention the software time needed to do what those programs are doing, that you mentioned you are using.

The 16X read time spec, is for data DVD's not movies.

Currently, DRU-510A owners are limited to 2x DVD ripping, but according to the PDF that comes with the software, overdrive mode allows for up to 8x ripping for dual-layered discs and 12x ripping for single-layered discs.
