Patton is over 2 hours long. I want to record on HDD from Sat and dub later to one (1) DVD-R with highest possible pq.

What settings should I use for the recording from Sat?

What settings for dubbing to DVD-R?

Thanks,

Henry

One method would be to record using XP speed onto the HDD, then use FR Mode to record onto the DVD-R.

Or just record it to the HDD directly in FR mode (saves the re-encoding step during the dub which can affect PQ and saves time since you can do a direct fast speed dub to DVD-R).

You're correct, Vic, but my thinking is that "Patton" runs a LONG 171 minutes, which will cause FR mode to drop the resolution.

If the movie is copied to the HDD at XP speed, he will have a great master to tinker with. I'm sure once he sees the serious drop in quality from using the FR mode (especially with a beautifully filmed wide-screen movie), he will opt to use two discs, or simply buy the DVD, which is now relatively cheap. ;)

Unfortunately, the version he was recording probably wasn't widescreen (if it was the same version I viewed). Yeah, XP makes sense if you planned to spread it across two disks, otherwise, he's better off just doing FR in the first place.

Vic,

Wouldn't he have to record at SP to spread it across 2 discs? And he can also do a hi-speed dub.

Yes, it would have to be SP for two disks, XP for three. And yes, if he maintains the same record quality and simply splits it across disks, he can use high speed dub. I was referring to the XP-to-FR dub originally recommended by Videonut which can only be done in real time.

I taped Patton from Cband Sat last night using DVD compatible in FR mode and dubbed it to DVD-R using FR mode and selected "High Speed" Looks ok when you consider there is almost 3 hours on the one disk.

There is a common misunderstanding starting with me about all this FR, High Speed etc as evidenced by several threads on this board. The owner's man is useless when it comes to implementing all the features the device does. It leaves too much for one to figure out rather than providing some strategies for doing some common task.

Is there a faq that deals with this for the E80?

Thanks everyone for your advice.
