At a forum for Panny recorders, there is some inconclusive discussion that the laser used for burning will last only about 1000 hours. Of course there is a finite life for this component, but 1000 hours seems short. Perhaps owners of earlier Panny recorders could comment on this…

I've burned close to 300 dvd-ram + dvd-r's on an old E20. That's about 600 hrs. Have not had any problems yet. If a component was designed to fail at 1000 hrs, it should show symptoms at the halfway point.

Of course, I have a Pioneer A03 burner on my PC that conked out at around the same point, and its failure was very sudden. So who knows? Maybe it's all luck and circumstance.
