Hello Everyone!! I read in the Sept. '03 issue of Stereophile Guide To Home Theater that Sony planned a software update for the RDR-GX7 that would enable it to record on DVD+R discs. Does anyone know anything more about this? The article does not go into detail on this.

Don't hold your breath (remember the HP and Sony PC DVD+RW burner debacles). But on the other hand, does it really matter because the Sony does write to DVD-R. DVD-/+R have roughly equivalent compatibility with today's DVD players. IMHO the Panasonic recorders with built-in hard drives are a much better value than the Sony. But that's water under the bridge now.

The Future ain't what it used to be...

I put a call into Sony last week, They are going to let me know if this is true. I'll post the answer when they call me back.

I usually enjoy Sony hi-end products but they are nowhere near Panasonic on it's standalone DVD recorders. Without a hard drive, Sony's is just overpriced. but good luck on upgrading it.

Even if Sony updates the firmware to support DVD+R, the fact of the matter is the RDR-GX7 still does not use the DVD+VR mode for DVD+R/RW.

However, by supporting all major writable DVDs, it will undoubtedly make this recorder a lot more attractive than it really is to people who are unsure of which DVD format to get. I'm sure there are lots of people out there who aren't willing to shell out $500+ for a DVD recorder in fear of picking the wrong format.

Of course this is dependent on Sony actually pulling off this planned update.

Given that Sony has been like the firmware-update-of-the-month club on their PC burners, it seems like just the kind of thing they'll pull off for their stand alone units.

I can't see this happening myself, even the new RDR-GX3 doesn't support DVD+R so I can't see that it will happen on the RDR-GX7.

I have spoken to a guy @ Sony through me working for a Sony dealer & there currently aren't any plans to firmware update the RDR-GX7 at least in the UK. Also to confirm we have now had in the RDR-GX3 that also doesn't support DVD+R either.

The PQ of the RDR-GX3 is identical to the GX7 although there are missing features in the picture adjustment department compared to the GX7 plus the machine has a plastic front panel as opposed to a metal front panel, no firewire & no optical output just coax digital out.

Where there is no difference between the GX7 & the GX3 is it's just as slow
