Please do more than "read the question". I really need an answer today, before I cough up the money at CC. The question is: will any of the current $1000.00, or less DVD recorders actually record programs/movies broadcast in DD5.1 (off Directv etc.) in 5.1 digital sound for playback? I mean record onto the recordable disks, not the hard-drives (my Directv/Ultimate already does the hard drive thingy). I'm leaning towards the Sony recorder, since I have one of their cameras. The recorder will be connected to both a Zenith 520 and Directv/Ultimate receiver and played back on either my Proscan 60-inch rptv, or through my Sharp 9000 onto a Draper 110-inch gray screen (Denon 5800 as pre-pro).

Come on, guys. Don't just look. Help me out here. Thanks.

None of the "home hobby" DVD recorders have the ability to record 5.1 ... there aren't any inputs for 5.1 (e.g., digital in). So far only professional recorders have this ability. We can hope ...

The digital rights management police will never allow direct digital 5.1. Philips announced a recorder with it some weeks ago and apparently abandoned the project.

BTW, you'd be paying a huge premium for the Sony name with the GX-7 recorder. You can get a better recorder WITH A HARD DRIVE for a couple hunderd dollars less than the GX-7. Furthermore, it is first generation and likely to have design issues. Finally, it doesn't record to DVD+R (just DVD+RW,-RW,-R) and the +RW functionality has been crippled. Other than that, I hear its a pretty "solid" recorder.

The Future ain't what it used to be...
